Dearly Beloved,
Grace and Peace to you.
When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”
—Matthew 21.23
The people thirsted for water. So the Lord said to Moses, “Take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.” Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.
—Exodus 17. 5-6
The power of God for life flows in us,
an unpluggable spring.
It asks no permission, follows no rules,
knows no bounds. It’s free.
It makes the flower blossom,
the child survive,
the artist reveal things,
the healer do miracles.
It gives you power to love,
to dare, to forgive.
It makes you shine with God.
People will ask you who you think you are
to do such things.
Never mind them.
People will assume you’re nuts,
walking up to the rock with your stick
like that.
They think you have to know something
about how to strike the rock, but you don’t.
The harder thing is not going up against
those stone-hearted ones who disbelieve.
It’s taking the stick
to the rocks of your own life,
the places you thought were dry and hard.
Inside the rock, I swear,
water gurgles.
Deep Blessings,
Pastor Steve
