When he was at the table with them,
he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. …
They told what had happened on the road,
and how he had been made known to them
in the breaking of the bread.
—Luke 24.30, 35
The prayers and doxologies are nice;
the creeds are splendid little things.
But sharing food is where we meet God.
Receiving what gives us life,
accepting it with gratitude, wonder and humility;
blessing it, dedicating it to the goodness of life;
dividing it up so it will be shared and not kept;
and placing sustenance in the hands of others:
this is how God is made known to us.
Not just in the bread,
but in the taking, blessing, breaking and giving of bread,
Word is made flesh.
