The patient is dull, listless, not fully awake—
yet restless:
classic signs of defiance,
self-anesthetization.
Still, your surgery is sure.
Every layer of tissue that is cut hurts,
every tumor exposed resists,
each suture a stitch of pain.
Such prayer will need to be followed up
by much rest,
the miracle of the Body healing itself,
the hand of the Healer touching me
with such gentle regard.
