God has rescued us from the power of darkness
and transferred us into the empire of God’s Beloved.
—Colossians 1.13
Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.
—Luke 23.43
This Sunday is Reign of Christ Sunday,
beholding the mystery that, as the old hymn says,
“Though the wrong seems oft so strong,
God is the ruler yet.”
Well, the wrong sure seems oft so strong these days,
with tyranny, abuse, and greed,
under a leader who actually imagines himself to be our king.
How can it be that the Christ of Love is ruler yet?
Will we be rescued from this mess?
We already are.
We live in two dimensions at once, two interwoven worlds.
Even in this world of ICE raids and legislated hunger,
slaughter in Gaza and Sudan and climate doom,
we live within the energy field of God’s grace.
Like gravity, it’s everywhere.
Even in our deepest troubles, the Beloved is there.
Jesus’ love is eternally supreme;
he reigns even from the cross.
Even today paradise is present;
it intersects this brutal world.
Tune your heart to that note.
Let that love alone rule you.
Can you feel his heart,
beating in yours?
