They asked him,
“Chief, is this the time
when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?”

Let us confess: we want those kingdoms.
We want our nation, our religion, to dominate.
We want to be right.
We want our way of life, our race,
our status, our power, to endure.
We’re back in the desert with Jesus,
tempted by the kingdoms of the world.
But such is not granted.
What is restored is the power to bear witness
even from a place of powerlessness,
to love without permission,
to be true without authority,
to trust without any security
but the mercy of God.
This, the empire of grace,
is the realm we are given
that cannot be taken away.
